1) Who are you?
I am an Open University staff member and serial student (undergraduate and now halfway through the MAODE). I was born and grew up in Cape Town, came to the UK when I was 19 to work as a pipe organ apprentice, then four years later started my first job at The Open University where I have worked ever since (over 27 years).
I work in Open Media and Informal Learning and look after OpenLearn Create, the sister platform to the more famous OpenLearn. I am interested in educational colonialism and accessibility of online learning.
2) What is your vibe? Share it in a meme or quote…
A quote by Eleanor Roosevelt has inspired my life and practice for more than 30 years: “The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.”
3) What gives you hope these days?
My incredibly resilient family, friends and colleagues, their creativity and enthusiasm. And music, always music.
4) Who are you learning from lately?
My MAODE peers and tutors, my colleagues as we learn to work together in new ways while physically apart. There is a great togetherness and care in our distance (it is only physical not social distance).
5) In your opinion, what should we all be caring about? Why?
Each other. And keeping a close watch on our ‘leaders’ and their actions – not being complacent about who we employ to represent our societies and holding them to account to ensure they care properly for people, our environment and animals.
6) What do you hope to take away from OER20?
More ideas and connectivity with others attending than ever before – I miss the face-to-face version of the OER conferences, but ironically taking it entirely online for caring and sensible reasons has enabled a wider group of people to participate.
