1) Who are you?
I’m an freshly-minted educator in computer science fundamentals, and a researcher in AI and robotics. Before that, I was a game developer for 25+ years and that field is still close to my heart. I’m also a musician, and build weird electronic instruments.
2) What is your vibe? Share it in a meme or quote…
I still feel, after all these years, that my field of compsci – building machines that do valuable work out of the stuff of ideas – is tremendous fun. Opening up that fun to people is the best thing in the world.
3) What gives you hope these days?
I came into higher education at the age of 49 (I’ve just finished my PhD now). The students and young people I’ve worked with have been wonderfully open, caring and welcoming. And they give me hope.
4) Who are you learning from lately?
My students, all the time.
5) In your opinion, what should we all be caring about? Why?
Our relationships with those of us who find it hard to reach out – particularly in the online world that has been forced onto us all in the current situation. The people who suffer invisibly are even more invisible now.
6) What do you hope to take away from OER20?
Ways of lowering the barriers for people with difficulties in reaching out when they’re having problems. New strategies.
