1) Who are you?

Wrangler of learning technologies by day, Dad, cyclist, soccer fan & home roaster of coffee by night. I am an educational technologist and advocate for the use of open educational resources and open education practices in higher education. I have worked in the British Columbia post-secondary system for 25 years, and am currently a Project Manager in Open Education for BCcampus in addition to being an Associate Professor in the School of Education and Technology at Royal Roads University.

2) What is your vibe? Share it in a meme or quote…

These days? An asynchronous man living in a synchronous world.

3) What gives you hope these days?

Hearing my son in the next room howling with laughter playing Fortnite online with his friends.

4) Who are you learning from lately?

I am lucky that I work with wonderful colleagues at BCcampus and Royal Roads who continually inspire me. Also grateful to work with wonderful educational technologists like Tannis Morgan, Anne-Marie Scott, Brian Lamb and Grant Potter as part of the OpenETC. And I learn from all of you.

5) In your opinion, what should we all be caring about? Why?

For me, the root of care is empathy. Really trying to understand the lived experiences of others. Empathy is in short supply these days and is a victim of hot take culture that seems to permeate so much of our culture these days. Working on ways to become more empathetic, to what our colleagues are going through, to what our students are going through, to what our neighbors, friends and families are going through, for me is at the heart of care.

6) What do you hope to take away from OER20?

New connections and new ways of improving my own practice. Also the ability to stay alert and engaged in the middle of the night :).
