The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) [2] is an ambitious initiative with a vision to develop a large infrastructure to support and develop open science and open innovation in Europe and beyond [3]. It is underpinned by the EOSC Declaration [4] which includes a commitment to long-term sustainability.
A recent post on the Open Science MOOC blog highlighted the need for open infrastructure for teaching and learning [5]. One of the key goals of the EOSC-synergy project [6] is to expand the EOSC training and education capabilities through the introduction of an online platform aimed at boosting the development of EOSC skills and competences. The infrastructure will be underpinned by open standards for metadata and interoperability.
The project is coordinated by CSIC, Spain, and involves nine participating countries (Spain, Portugal, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Netherlands, UK, Germany, France). The project builds on previous work analysing policy priorities for skills development in EOSC, identifying these with data stewardship – a broad set of skills covering open science, data management, data science and engineering [7].
The learning platform will provide an environment for the easy creation and delivery of online training, with an accredited programme of training for users to ensure high quality material is produced. This will increase the training available to all EOSC stakeholders, reduce the learning curve to acquire the skills to become active in EOSC, and expand the EOSC training network.
The 3 main activities of the project are:
1. Development of an EOSC training platform – a point for the creation of EOSC training courses based on a sustainable platform for massive open online courses and other online learning, using a self-deployable training infrastructure
2. Development of how-to guides and delivery of a training programme for trainers to create high quality online learning materials in the field of open science
3. Collaboration with national education programmes to improve open science skills and increased use of EOSC
The result we hope will be an open, sustainable, infrastructure for learning, incorporating a range of related tools useful for teaching and learning in open science and scholarship. We aim to embed the teaching resources produced as part of our project into existing national education programmes and research communities, in order to develop skills in using open data and sharing/re-using open educational resources. As a result, this proposal fits under the theme of ‘Sustainable open education communities’.
We are taking an agile approach to development, incorporating user testing and feedback. We would therefore welcome an opportunity to get feedback on our work so far via an interactive presentation.
