Session Description
The OER20 Call for Proposals asks two important questions:
How can we map out and give visibility to the critical components of care practices?
How can we build sustainable communities, participatory practices, and civic engagement for the public good and a healthier democracy?
Our quilt project addresses both of those questions in both social and material fashions.
The quilt is simultaneously inspired by and enables criticality of the practice of care in Open Education (Lambert 2018). Its existence in material and digital form enables visibility to practices of care.
Grounded within Femedtech, the quilt both benefits from and extends the sustainability of the Femedtech itself. The quilt project offers engagement in a material form and the potential for activism – to prromote change in line with femedtech values.
At the workshop and more broadly at OER20, we will be asking people :
How can the #Femedtechquilt make a difference to Care and Justice in Open Education?
The workshop relies on a great deal of work happening between the launch of the Call for Participation in The Femedtech Quilt of Care and Justice in Open Education (Bell, 2019) in November 2019, and OER20 in London in April 2020. And we are confident that work will have borne fruit well before 1 April 2020 The very positive response that we have had to our request for commitments to contribute to the quilt assures us that by the time that delegates gather for the conference, we will have an almost complete quilt – a thing of beauty.
Individuals, groups and communities from around the world will have sent in fabric; stitched, painted or otherwise embellished blocks; and offered found objects and words. It has been important to us from the start to enable participation that is as inclusive as possible, regardless of level of skill or experience with crafting and quilting. We have welcomed all contributions – expert or naive – along with their stories, that will be captured in the digital artefact at http://bit.ly/Femedtechquilt .
Arriving at the workshop with an almost complete quilt, we will have two goals. Firstly, we will offer workshop participants the opportunity to contribute to the quilt. There will be a range of quick and simple ways to contribute to the quilt, including applying final touches to the quilt by hand and machine sewing, writing and drawing with fabric pens, fastening on found objects, and making new sayings from old words.
And secondly, we will look to the future. How can the quilt contribute to change in Open Education?
Session content
Brief introduction
We will briefly cover the origin and process of #Femedtechquilt and goals of session.
We anticipate showing brief videos from contributors to quilt who can’t attend conference. (5 mins)
The rest of the workshop will be devoted to:
Practical activities that help “complete” the quilt, such as adding stitches to the binding, adding words to few remaining blank squares, tieing on contributed ‘found objects’, adding art work with fabric pens (40 mins)
Imagining the future of #femedtechquilt and what difference it can make. (10 mins)
